Looking back and ahead

We are back from a lovely post-Christmas trip to Nothern Michigan. That only explains a few days of silence here. The rest I chalk up to Christmas, work, being sick, pre-Christmas craziness, work craziness and being sick.

I like to think things are settling down now. Don't we always kid ourselves with that illusion?

Anyway, I just posted my remaining book list from 2006 (the first part is here). I read 18 books last year compared to 26 the year before. [YES, I keep these kind of records. Doesn't everybody?] At first this puzzled me. The books weren't, on average, longer than those read before, nor was I reading less before bed. Then I thought about other times and places I might read and -- aha! -- there it was. Knitting is the culprit. I now knit on the bus, which is time I used to spend reading. I could not have imagined that the different would amount to eight books worth of time, but it's the only explanation that makes sense. Of course, I'll have to see how I fare this year to see if my theory holds water.

The pleasant part of this is that the knitting isn't a poor substitute for reading in my opinion. I look back over what I read and feel pleased with the balance of fiction and non-fiction, candy reading and academic work. If I read less of it than I might otherwise have, but in return produced
  • two baby sweaters
  • one pair of fingerless mittens
  • a cardigan for myself
  • two scarves
  • a "rescue sweater" for my son
then I don't feel badly at all.

As for births, this year I attended eight in total, as follows
  • one stillbirth (whose weight is far greater than all the others in my heart), seven live births
  • one twin birth, six "singlets"
  • one VBAC (the twins), seven vaginal deliveries
  • three mothers that used epidurals, four mothers that did not
  • one family practice physician caregiver, two CNMs, four OB/GYNs
  • one lesbian couple, six heterosexual couples
  • two repeat clients, five new clients (five new friends!)
  • three primips, four multips
I don't have cumulative data off the top of my head but am curious to see it. I think I've been at 25 births now. Still a newbie, but so much more familiar with the "scene" than when I started.

They say you're much more likely to keep your goals if you write them down (and even moreso if you tell them to others...this is both, I guess). Anyway, in 2007, the things I want to try to do, for which I need all the incentive I can get are:
1. Meet with at least one potential donor to the Center each month
2. Run the Dexter-Ann Arbor 10K
3. Do less blogging (and blog reading) at work.

That last one may mean less frequent posting. But this blog is still very important to me, as are those of you whom I've gotten to know through this (or your) blog. Here's to another year of education, support and dialogue in our virtual world.

Functional again

Well.

First five days of virus that kicked my butt, then a 3-day conference in Chicago. Now I have a choice cold courtesy of both boys. I can only hope this is the last of it before Christmas.

So what's new out there? I've tried to visit the usual blogs, but it's been hard with the slow home modum connection and lack of computer at the conference.

With me:

1. I'm meeting this weekend with a new client. Actually a repeat client, but this is the first time we're meeting for this pregnancy.

2. I have been very negligent in following up with my two October clients, both of whom still have dishes of mine I haven't been by to pick up yet. It is so hard to get out in the evenings or weekends when that's the only free time one has. I'm beginning to realize that my old (i.e. before spouse got a job) schedule, which had me home one Fridays, gave me a lot of latitude with postpartum doula visits. Now it all has to happen after work or on the weekends. And THAT means asking the spouse to do more solo child care.

3. I'm happy to see confirmation of what I've been hearing and observing first hand: epidurals adversly affect breastfeeding. Paricularly those epidurals with fentanyl. I understand it's possible to create an effective epidural without it. Perhaps this evidence will justify a new recipe for the epidural cocktail. I can say that the 3 clients I've had whose breastfeeding experiences were horrible, particularly with latch issues, were all women who were on extended (8+ hours) epidurals.

4. Knitting: soon a WIP and FO post. Just gotta upload photos.

I sincerely hope this is the start of a new blogging groove. Thanks for those who visited and left encouraging comments.

Knitting Update

I am cranking on projects. Unfortunately, I only have photos of the most neglected one to share. Inspired by Eunny, I decided it was time to tackle entrelac. I also found the perfect excuse to by Rowan Tapestry, which I'd fallen in love with on-line. It took me at least three tiers to stop thinking, "Whoever came up with entrelac is the most clever person in. the. world."

Anyway, this is the scarf in progress. I'm using a a modified pattern of Scarf Style's Lady Eleanor Stole. Namely, I am doing 4 squares instead of seven, size five needles instead of whatever larger size the pattern calls for, and Rowan instead of La Lana.

I can't decide whether to block it, which will take out some of the "wiggliness" of the squares, or leave them with their oh-so-woven appearance.

I am also making a sweater for my older son and designing it as I go along! So far the only glitch is that the back panel was too short. So I had to lengthen it. Scary stuff. But it worked.

And I never posted about the yarn I bought from Briar Rose Fiber's Trunk Sale a few weekends ago. But buy I did. I am currently making their cabled mitts with Earth Song in a blue-purple-green colorway. In reserve I have another hank of the Earth Song, one of Sea Pearl and one of Sonoma, all in blues and browns.

If you missed the trunk sale in November, it is back again tomorrow (Dec. 2) at 218 Pine Ridge Stree in Ann Arbor. The sale is worth visiting. It's at the home of a woman who makes jewelry and also hosts a few other small-business artists. Take your Christmas/Hanukkah lists!
