Reason #38 to Avoid a Cesarean

The doctor might be drunk!

At least with a vaginal birth, the mother can control whether the person in charge of getting the baby out (i.e. herself) is doing so under the influence of alcohol. Sadly, that is not always insurance enough to keep birth a sober and safe experience.

Deb, I agree. This reminded me of an article I read a year or two ago about a great family practice doctor somewhere who had a drinking problem and how everyone from the hospital to his physician colleagues to his wife covered for him. Until someone died. I wish I could remember where I read it, but I can't. The New Yorker? Atul Gawande's book? Anyway, the article gave the impression the doctor was not the only such case.

At the risk of sounding facetious, I am very curious what the drunk mother's birthing experience was like.

well...and if it was the only time she was drunk during pregnancy, who are we to say it's worse than the chemicals we let hopitals administer during labor...narcotics, etc.?
